I am excited to announce that I am running for re-election to the Oakland School Board in 2016! The election is this November, and I will formally launch my campaign at an event scheduled for Sunday, March 13. [Click to RSVP]
The Road Ahead
Since I joined the School Board in 2009, I have helped to lead Oakland Unified out of State receivership, restoring the District’s financial health and improving education outcomes for students. But there is still plenty of work to do, and I am committed to continuing my advocacy for quality public education as we build a better future for Oakland school children and the communities where they live.
Progress for Oakland’s Kids
Oakland Unified is now recognized for its work to help students who have historically been underserved by the school system. We are focused on sending more of our children to higher education, be that trade school, community college, or four-year college. High schools throughout Oakland are planning how in September they will expand career pathway programs that link what kids learn in the classroom to what they might do when they finish school.
Oakland Unified is a leader in social emotional learning – serving the needs of the whole child through our community schools model. We have health clinics in 16 schools across the City and are building a new central kitchen with an adjacent 1.5 acre educational farm. Oakland is recognized for constructing award-winning green school campuses, an area where I’ve been able to use my professional expertise in sustainability and energy.
This progress moves better and faster when we have stable leadership and governance. I am a respected leader on the School Board, having served several years as Vice President and President. I have authored pivotal policies on community engagement and asset management, and I’m proud to be leading a conversation in Oakland right now about how we can provide affordable housing in our community for educators. With your support in November, I can continue to build on this progress.
